Lets Walk
22 May 2007For the most part of our lives, the state of our health comes down to numbers – the recommended daily calorie intake, your ideal body mass index and your blood pressure rate to name but a few.
Whereas most people know that an adult should engage in thirty minutes of physical activity, five times per week and eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle, just how many of us know how many steps the soles of our feet should be covering to help us on our way to that ultimate fitness destination.
The British Heart Foundation recommends that in between the first plundering steps to the bathroom in the morning, to the last few as we crawl into bed at night, we should have walked 10,000 steps in one day to help maintain a healthy heart and help to reduce body fat.
With 8,000 square miles of Wales at our feet, our country serves up a veritable host of natural terrains, parks and open spaces which should make you want to dust off those walking boots and set about reaching that 10,000 steps a day total.
So if your attitude to healthy living has always been "If we were meant to touch our toes, they would be further up our bodies," – think again!
2008/09 Grants for the Let's Walk Cymru programme now released.
